NB: Biography

NB: (pronounced en bee) became a group whilst two friends were sitting in their lounge room absorbed in their own music when one of them asked for help. Katie could not quite get the syncopated guitar rhythm to work with her vocals. Rob deep inside his laptop happened to over-hear the cursing and loud discordant strumming and suggested that she should practice more in another room. Or he could sample the guitar riff and play it back so Katie could then happily sing along without the stress of getting the guitar right. After playing around for a while they had a nice little ditty. However, Rob was not content. The next day he spent hours chopping and changing the vocals, adding little bells and whistles and even some bass. By the time Katie came home, Rob had together the workings of a track, "Sun". Several weeks later they played it in a small club in London, live. Laptop and vocalist.

2005 was a rough year. Although NB: made it through to the second round of Glastonbury’´s Unsigned band competition, Katie K left to return to Australia. However, with ideas being bounced back and forth over the internet NB: continued.

The opportunity for gigs in London, competitions and exciting new material made 2006 a growing year. Without Katie, Rob pulled on the support of many of his close friends. Vocalists, Sax and Trumpet players, guitarists and percussionists were brought into the NB: fold to continue to create the unique NB: sound.

2006 also saw NB: make 13th place (from 3000 entries) in the X-Press 2 ”Kill 100” Remix competition. This competition was another great boost of confidence causing a push forward that resulted in the completion of NB:’s first album, “Ticking Boxes?” at the end of 2006. This was recorded and produced in the living room of Rob's flat for friends, family and fan’s alike. With an impending launch in early 2007 the live element of NB: is being further developed to take on the new angles of sound, from latino house and driving beats to eclectic pop with catchy lyrics and brooding atmospheric film scores.

Catchy lyrics are an understatement. Many friends have often yelled at Rob after getting NB:s song stuck in their head. It isn´t his fault though. They just occur naturally. Which is very handy for NB:. Everyday happenings from amusing personality traits to political tirades. All placed over electronic beats and sweeping soundscapes that are built up from an original riff or idea.

Influences come from far and wide to try and meld in Rob’s head; in fact the further the better. Being a professional DJ, (aka Rob Boy Right), Rob eats, sleeps and breathes music. His DJ sets map out different adventures through these sounds, from his Friday night House sessions with Live saxophinist, Matty Zee ranging from deep and jazzy to dark electro via latino uplifting house to his Saturday morning residency looking at everything else. Beatles vs. Unabombers. Amp Fiddler vs. Michael Franti. Ruby Braff vs. 50’s Crooners.

An early fan stated that NB:’s sounds were "intense internal emotional feelings of “push and pull”…I can not describe it any other way”." Note well, Nota bene, NB: 2007 is going to be a very big year for NB:.
